Produced and grown since the 18th century, the blood orange is a variety of orange with crimson and evidently stands for its name with the almost blood coloured flesh. The distinctive red blood flesh is due to the presence of anthocyanins, a family of antioxidant pigments common to many flowers but uncommon in citrus fruits.

Falling into the winter citrus family, the blood orange peaks in Season July, August and September as favourable weather conditions results in flavoursome and quality crops. The temperature is thought to affect the darkness of the red colour, with the climate of the trees growth reflective of the formation of the red hue
